Need Of Vlsi Design Institute To Be A Circuit Designer

VLSI stands for Very Large Scale Integration. It can be defined as the process of designing integrated circuits (ICs) by integrating thousands or even lakhs of transistors into a single chip. It made it possible for the IC designers to merge the three basic components of a computer namely, CPU (Central Processing Unit), RAM (Random Access Memory) and ROM (Read Only Memory) into one.


Effect of VLSI on devices manufactured

When the humans first made the computer, it worked on vacuum tubes. Those were so big in size that they don’t even fit in a normal sized room. It released a great amount of heat and sound, making the working condition worst. Also, they weren’t suitable for very large calculations. The advent of VSLI made modern day electronic devices compact, fast and cheaper. It has increased the efficiency of devices by leaps and bounds. The count of transistors used in VLSI design in increasing day by day.

Classification of VLSI design

Designing of ICs is a kind of legacy passed on from one electronic circuit designers to others. In order to carry forward this, various institutes are offering vlsi design training courses. It can be classified as:

·      Front End Design (FED)- It uses HDL (Hardware Description Language) technique and simulation technique. HDL describes the nature of electronic circuits and used to design their structure while the simulation technique is used to analyze the performance of the circuits.
·      Back End Design (BED)- It uses CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) technology. It also has an error detection simulator and tangible design of the circuits.

Designing Steps

It is a step by step procedure. Debugging of each step is done before proceeding to the next one. Major design steps are as follows:

·      Technique determination- According to the software requirement, it has to be determined whether FED or BED or a customized technique is to be used.
·      Defining the architecture- Cache size of arithmetic and logical unit (ALU) has to be defined, along with various other basic specifications. 
·      Functional design- Major functional unit is defined. Interconnect required between the physical and electrical specification of every unit is identified.
·      Logic design- The logic on the basis of which the software will word is developed in this stage.
·      Circuit design- The logic developed in the previous step is converted into the electronic design in the form of a netlist.
·      Physical design- The netlist is transformed into a geometrical representation. The result obtained after this conversation is called a layout. This step has predefined rules which cannot be altered.
·      Packaging- It provides the circuit with a protective framework and an aesthetic look. Manufacturer name and other necessary codes are printed on the packing to get the finished product.

Anyone who is interested in circuit designing has to get himself registered in a vlsi design institute. With proper training provided by the institute, one can possibly master these designing steps.

The technological advancement depends on VLSI technology. Although there are few complications in using it yet its advantages are enough to negate the drawbacks.
